Average net worth by age in Australia (2026)
Estimated household net worth by age of the household reference person. Median is the midpoint — half of households have less. The mean is much higher at every age because wealth concentrates at the top.
| Age group | Median net worth | Mean net worth | Top 10% starts at |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 35 | $103,000 | $210,000 | $760,000 |
| 35–44 | $387,000 | $680,000 | $1,650,000 |
| 45–54 | $665,000 | $1,080,000 | $2,400,000 |
| 55–64 | $872,000 | $1,400,000 | $3,000,000 |
| 65–74 | $930,000 | $1,550,000 | $3,100,000 |
| 75+ | $778,000 | $1,310,000 | $2,600,000 |
| All households | $750,000 | $1,390,000 | $2,900,000 |
Estimates modelled from the ABS Survey of Income and Housing 2019–20 (median household net worth $579,200; mean $1.04m), indexed for residential property and superannuation growth to 2026 and cross-checked against HILDA wealth-module data and KPMG analysis of ABS national accounts. Not official ABS figures.
What actually moves the needle
For most Australian households, net worth is dominated by two things: home equity and superannuation. That makes the structure of your home loan one of the biggest levers you control:
- Pay less interest for the same house. A 0.5% rate difference on a $600k loan is roughly $3,000 a year — compounding into your equity instead of the bank's. Model it in the refinance playground.
- Shorten the loan, not just the rate. Extra repayments and offset balances cut years off the term — see pay off faster for the maths.
- Put usable equity to work. Below 80% LVR, equity can sometimes fund an investment property without cash savings — the investor hub explains how lenders assess it.
- Know what your property is worth. Equity starts with an accurate value — request a free property report.
Methodology & sources
Definition. Net worth = total assets (property at market value, super, cash, shares/ETFs, other) minus total liabilities (mortgages and other debt) — the same definition the ABS uses for household wealth.
Benchmarks. Percentile anchors per age band are modelled from the ABS Survey of Income and Housing 2019–20 — the most recent published ABS wealth survey — indexed to 2026 using residential property price growth and superannuation returns, and cross-checked against HILDA Wave 22 wealth estimates and KPMG's FY2024-25 household wealth analysis. Between anchor points we interpolate log-linearly, which suits the shape of wealth distributions.
Limits. These are population-level estimates for general education. Your percentile is approximate — household composition, city vs regional property markets, and business assets all shift the picture. Nothing here is financial, credit or tax advice.
