Fortnightly and weekly take-home pay

Most Australians are paid weekly or fortnightly while salaries are quoted annually. This take-home pay calculator converts any entry into every cycle at once so you can budget against rent or a mortgage repayment. On $80,000 in 2026–27 that is about $2,457 per fortnight or $1,228 per week after tax and Medicare (no HECS, with hospital cover).

2026–27 vs 2025–26 take-home pay

From 1 July 2026 the $18,201$45,000 band fell from 16% to 15%. Anyone earning above $45,000 keeps about $268 more a year under the same assumptions (no HECS, hospital cover on). Switch the tax year in the calculator to compare your own file.

HECS / HELP repayment thresholds 2026–27

From 2025–26 the ATO charges study loans marginally — you repay a percentage of income above the threshold, not a percentage of your whole salary. The change means a pay rise no longer pushes your entire income into a higher repayment rate.

A HELP debt also reduces borrowing power because lenders treat the repayment as a committed expense. See how HECS/HELP affects borrowing power and the 2026 APRA rules on study debt.

How to calculate take-home pay

  1. Enter your pay. Type your gross pay into the take-home pay calculator — the amount before tax is deducted.
  2. Choose how you are paid. Select hourly, daily, weekly, fortnightly, monthly or yearly. For hourly or daily pay, set your hours or days per week.
  3. Set the tax year and super treatment. Pick the financial year, then choose whether super is paid on top of your salary or your figure is a total package that already includes it.
  4. Add HECS/HELP and private health cover. Tick the HECS/HELP option if you have a study loan, and tick private hospital cover to remove the Medicare levy surcharge.
  5. Read your take-home pay. The table shows take-home pay, taxable income, income tax, Medicare levy, any HELP repayment and employer super across weekly, fortnightly, monthly and annual pay cycles.

What this pay calculator covers

  • Hourly, daily, weekly, fortnightly, monthly and yearly pay entry
  • Resident income tax for 2024–25, 2025–26 and 2026–27
  • Low income tax offset (LITO) applied automatically
  • Medicare levy with the ATO low-income shade-in
  • Medicare levy surcharge when you have no hospital cover
  • HECS/HELP under the marginal repayment system
  • Salary packaged as "super on top" or "package includes super"
  • Salary sacrifice and a custom super guarantee rate

Rates come from the ATO schedules for resident taxpayers and were last reviewed 2026-07-30. Foreign residents, working holiday makers, family Medicare reductions and fringe benefits are not modelled — confirm anything that matters on ato.gov.au or with a registered tax agent.

Advanced modelling — family payments, overtime and scenarios

Everything below is built into the calculator at the top of this page — no separate tool, no sign-up. Use the chips under your pay to open a section, or the tabs beneath the results.

  • What-if slider and saved scenarios

Drag your salary and watch take-home move, then save up to three scenarios to compare a current job against an offer.

  • Overtime, bonuses and penalty rates

Model overtime hours at time-and-a-half or double time. Overtime is taxed but carries no super, which is where most payslip confusion starts.

  • Salary packaging and novated leases

Sacrifice to super, employer contributions above the guarantee, and a grossed-up reportable fringe benefit sketch for a novated lease.

  • Part-year and seniors

Scale to the weeks you actually worked for a mid-year start, and apply the seniors and pensioners tax offset.

  • HELP payoff timeline

Enter your balance and an indexation rate to see roughly how long compulsory repayments take to clear it.

  • Family payments and dual earners

Family Tax Benefit and Child Care Subsidy income-test sketches, plus a partner income column for combined household cashflow.

Pay calculator — frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my take-home pay in Australia?

Take-home pay is your gross salary minus income tax, the 2% Medicare levy, any Medicare levy surcharge, and any compulsory HECS/HELP repayment. Superannuation is normally paid by your employer on top, so it does not reduce your take-home pay. Enter your salary in this free take-home pay calculator Australia tool and it works the figure out for the 2026–27 year across weekly, fortnightly, monthly and annual pay cycles.

What will my take-home pay be on $80,000?

On an $80,000 gross salary in 2026–27, income tax is about $14,520 and the Medicare levy is about $1,600 — roughly $16,120 total. Net take-home is about $63,880 a year, or $2,457 per fortnight. Employer super of about $9,600 is paid on top. These figures assume no HECS/HELP debt and private hospital cover.

How much is $100,000 after tax in Australia?

On a $100,000 salary in 2026–27, tax and the Medicare levy come to about $22,520, leaving roughly $77,480 a year — about $2,980 per fortnight or $1,490 per week. Your employer also pays around $12,000 into super on top. A HECS/HELP debt or missing private hospital cover will reduce that figure.

How much tax do I pay on $80,000 in Australia?

A $80,000 salary in 2026–27 attracts about $14,520 in income tax plus $1,600 Medicare levy — roughly $16,120 in total, or an effective rate of 20.2%. That leaves about $63,880 take-home. The effective rate is well below the 30% marginal rate because the first $18,200 is tax free.

How much is $70,000 after tax in Australia?

On $70,000 in 2026–27, expect roughly $12,920 in income tax and Medicare levy combined, leaving about $57,080 take-home — around $2,195 per fortnight. Employer super of about $8,400 is paid on top. Use the calculator above if you have HECS/HELP or no hospital cover.

If I earn $40 an hour, what is my annual take-home pay?

At $40 per hour over a standard 38-hour week (about 1,976 hours a year), gross annual income is about $79,040. In 2026–27 this take-home pay calculator estimates roughly $63,227 after tax and Medicare — about $1,216 per week. Irregular casual hours will average differently; enter your real hours in the hourly mode above.

What are the Australian income tax rates for 2026–27?

For Australian residents in 2026–27: nothing on the first $18,200, 15% from $18,201 to $45,000, 30% from $45,001 to $135,000, 37% from $135,001 to $190,000, and 45% above $190,000. The 2% Medicare levy applies separately. The first band dropped from 16% to 15% on 1 July 2026, which is worth up to $268 a year.

Does an $80k salary include super?

Usually no — an advertised $80,000 salary is base pay before super, and the 12% Superannuation Guarantee is paid on top into your fund. Some offers quote total remuneration that already bundles super into the headline number. Switch this calculator to “Package includes super” if your figure is total package, so tax is worked on the salary portion only.

Does the pay calculator include HECS and HELP repayments?

Yes — tick the HECS/HELP option. From 2025–26 the ATO charges compulsory repayments marginally, so you only repay on income above the threshold rather than a percentage of your whole salary. In 2026–27 the threshold is $69,528, and the first band is 15% of income above it. The calculator applies this automatically once the option is on.

Is superannuation included in my take-home pay?

No. Employer super is paid into your super fund, not your bank account, so it never appears in take-home pay. The super guarantee rate is 12% from 1 July 2025. If your job was advertised as a total package that already includes super, switch the calculator to "Package includes super" — it will gross the figure down before working out tax.

Does this include the standard $1,000 work-related deduction?

Not by default — the same as PAYG withholding on your payslip. From 1 July 2026 eligible residents can claim a standard $1,000 work-related deduction at tax time without receipts. Leaving it out matches what most people see each pay cycle; the annual tax-return position can be higher once you lodge. Confirm eligibility and higher claimable expenses with a registered tax agent or the ATO.

What is the difference between gross pay and net pay?

Gross pay is your salary before anything is deducted. Net pay — also called take-home pay — is what lands in your bank account after income tax, the Medicare levy, and any HELP repayment. The gap widens as you earn more because higher slices of income are taxed at higher marginal rates.

How do I work out my hourly rate or casual pay after tax?

Choose "Per hour" in the calculator and set your hours per week. The tool annualises the figure (rate × hours × 52), applies tax for the year, and converts back to weekly, fortnightly and monthly amounts. Casual loading is already built into the hourly rate on your payslip, so enter the loaded rate you are actually paid. Irregular hours will average out differently across a year.

Does salary sacrificing reduce my tax?

Salary sacrificing into super reduces your taxable income, so it lowers income tax — contributions are generally taxed at 15% inside the fund instead of your marginal rate. Two catches: the ATO adds sacrificed amounts back when calculating HELP repayments and the Medicare levy surcharge, and employer super plus your sacrifice must stay under the concessional cap. Open "salary packaging" in the calculator to model it.

What is the Medicare levy surcharge and how do I avoid it?

The surcharge is an extra 1% to 1.5% charged on top of the standard 2% Medicare levy if you do not hold private hospital cover and your income exceeds the threshold — $105,000 for singles in 2026–27. Holding an appropriate hospital policy removes it. Tick "Private hospital cover" in the calculator to see the difference on your income.

Does overtime get taxed more heavily in Australia?

No — overtime is taxed at the same marginal rates as the rest of your income. It can feel like it is taxed harder because a big overtime week pushes that pay period into a higher PAYG withholding bracket, and it evens out at tax time. The real difference is superannuation: overtime is not ordinary time earnings, so no super is payable on it, while bonuses and commissions generally do attract super. Open the "Overtime & bonus" chip in the calculator to model hours at time-and-a-half or double time.

How does a novated lease affect my take-home pay and my home loan?

A novated lease reduces your taxable income because payments come out of pre-tax salary, so take-home pay falls but the tax saving offsets part of it. The catch is that the benefit is usually reported as a grossed-up fringe benefit, which the ATO counts when working out your HELP repayment and Medicare levy surcharge — and which lenders treat as a commitment against your borrowing power. The calculator sketches this: enter your weekly lease cost under "Packaging & sacrifice". Eligible electric vehicles under the threshold are currently FBT-exempt, which changes the maths considerably.

Can the calculator estimate Family Tax Benefit or Child Care Subsidy?

The Family tab shows an illustration of the income tests for Family Tax Benefit Part A and Part B and for the Child Care Subsidy, based on your taxable income plus an optional partner income. Treat it as a rough guide only. Services Australia also assesses residency, immunisation, care percentage and activity tests that a pay calculator cannot see, so it is never an entitlement or a determination — confirm any figure with Services Australia.

Can I calculate take-home pay for two incomes in a household?

Yes. Add a partner income in the Family tab and the calculator shows combined take-home pay, combined tax and combined employer super. Australia taxes individuals rather than households, so this is two separate calculations added together, not a joint return. It is useful for household budgeting and for the family income figure the Family Tax Benefit and Child Care Subsidy tests use.

What if I only worked part of the financial year?

Set "weeks worked this financial year" under "Packaging & sacrifice". Because tax rates are progressive and the first $18,200 is tax free, working half a year on the same salary usually means a much lower effective tax rate than a full year — not simply half the tax. PAYG withholding assumes you will earn at that rate all year, which is why people who start a job mid-year, take unpaid leave or go part-time often receive a refund.

Can I use take-home pay to work out how much I can borrow?

It is the right starting point for a budget, but lenders do not simply use net pay. They shade overtime, bonus and casual income, apply an assessment rate roughly 3% above the actual rate, and measure your living expenses against benchmarks like HEM. A HECS/HELP debt also reduces borrowing power. Bishnu Adhikari can map your take-home pay to a realistic borrowing figure across lenders.

Is this calculator free, and is my salary sent anywhere?

It is completely free with no sign-up. The calculation runs entirely in your browser — your salary is never transmitted to us or stored on a server. Only the contact details you deliberately type into an enquiry form are sent to Azure Home Loans.

Want this take-home figure sense-checked against lender assessment?

Estimates help budgeting — lenders shade overtime, bonuses and casual income differently, and living-expense benchmarks matter. As your mortgage broker, Bishnu Adhikari can map take-home to borrowing without you pasting salary into this form. Call 0400 77 77 55 or send a short note below.
