What actually happens on decision day

  1. Step 1

2:30pm Sydney time — statement released

The media release sets the cash rate target and explains the vote. The target takes effect the next business day. This is the only thing that changes at 2:30pm.

  2. Step 2

Same day to about a week — lenders announce

Each lender decides whether to move variable rates, by how much, and from what date. After the September 2026 rise the four majors announced within two days and moved variable rates from 9 October.

  3. Step 3

Rate date, then notice, then debit

A higher repayment needs written notice before it is debited. The day the rate applies, the day you can see it in the app, and the day the money leaves are usually three different dates. Read your own notice.

  4. Step 4

    Two weeks later — minutes

The minutes show how the Board weighed the options. They matter for the next meeting, not for the repayment that is already changing.

Four things worth doing the week before a meeting

  • Know your current rate and spread. Your rate minus the cash rate is the number a retention team can move. Compare it against the rate check before you ring.
  • Stress-test +0.25% and +0.50%. The repayment calculator prices a rate move on your balance in seconds. Budget off that, not the headline.
  • Check fixed-rate expiry dates. A fixed loan rolling to variable near a meeting reprices at whatever the lender is charging then. See fixed vs variable.
  • Pre-approval about to expire? Lenders reassess on the policy in force at the time. A rise between approval and settlement can change the answer. Read how pre-approval works.

RBA meeting dates — questions people ask

When is the next RBA interest rate decision?

Tuesday 3 November 2026, announced at 2:30pm Sydney time. The Board meets the day before as well; the statement is released on the second day. The full 2026 and 2027 schedule is published by the RBA and reproduced on this page.

What time does the RBA announce the cash rate?

2:30pm Sydney time on the second day of the meeting — that is AEDT during daylight saving (October to April) and AEST otherwise. The media release appears on rba.gov.au at that moment; the Governor's press conference follows. Minutes are published two weeks after the meeting.

How many times has the RBA raised rates in 2026?

Four times so far: 3 February (to 3.85%), 17 March (to 4.10%), 5 May (to 4.35%) and 29 September (to 4.60%). The Board held in June and August. Each row above links to the RBA media release for that meeting.

Does my home loan rate change on the decision day?

No. The decision moves the cash rate target, which the RBA publishes as effective the following day. Your lender then decides whether, when and by how much to move your variable rate, and must give written notice before a higher repayment is debited. After the 29 September 2026 rise the major banks moved variable rates from 9 October, with repayment changes following on each lender’s own schedule. Fixed rates do not change until the fixed period ends.

How many times a year does the RBA meet?

Eight. Since 2024 the Board has met over two days in February, March, May, June, August, September, November and December, following the release of key inflation and activity data. There is no meeting in January, April, July or October.

Where do these dates come from?

The RBA's board meeting schedules page, checked on Saturday 10 October 2026. Decision outcomes come from the numbered media release for each meeting. Azure Home Loans does not forecast decisions; future meetings are listed with a date and no outcome.
